From Arbor Day Foundation : The Burbank plum is a Japanese plum cultivar. The branches fork frequently, spread low and wide giving a flat topped appearance, and often droop. The foliage is bright green. The white flowers have five oval petals in umbrel-like clusters of 2-3 on short spurs, and solitary or 2-3 in axils of one year old wood. They bloom early making them susceptible to late frost. Fruiting begins in 2-4 years. The skin of the plums is red-purple with a yellow blush, and the amber flesh is firm, juicy, and sweet. The fruit ripens in July to August. It is best when picked before fully ripe. Burbank plum prefers non-alkaline, sandy loam soils with good drainage. The site should be sunny and free of early frost. Rainfall and high humidity during the growing season can reduce production by accentuating diseases and cause fruit cracking. Plums require minimal pruning which should be done after flowering when the tree is still leafless. In the formative years, pruning can be to remove interior branches, water sprouts, growing scaffold branches, and dead, damaged, or diseased wood. In maturity, vigorous upright shoots are removed as fruiting increasingly occurs on spurs on older wood. Flowers are followed by slightly prickly husky capsules (1.5” diameter), each typically containing two or three nuts. Nuts are poisonous. Genus name is the Latin name for a kind of oak bearing edible acorns but applied by Linnaeus to this genus. Specific epithet means flesh-colored or deep pink. Briotii’ is a cultivar that was named in 1858 to honor Pierre Louis Briot, the nurseryman at Trianon-Versailles near Paris, France. In comparison to Aesculus x carnea, this cultivar is perhaps best noted for its darker red flowers and larger flower panicles. Metasequoia glyptostroboides, commonly called dawn redwood, is a deciduous, coniferous tree that grows in a conical shape to 100’ tall. It is related to and closely resembles bald cypress (Taxodium) and redwood (Sequoia). From fossil records, dawn redwood is known to have existed as many as 50,000,000 years ago. However, it was not until 1941 that it was first discovered growing in the wild near the town of Modaoqi, China by Chinese forester, T. Kan. Seeds collected from the original site were made available to the Missouri Botanical Garden in 1947. Seedlings grown therefrom were planted in front of the Lehmann Building at MBG in 1952 where they have now developed into large mature trees (70’+ tall). As the tree matures, the trunk broadens at the base and develops attractive and sometimes elaborate fluting. Bark on mature trees is often deeply fissured. It features linear, feathery, fern-like foliage that is soft to the touch. Foliage emerges light green in spring, matures to deep green in summer and turns red-bronze in fall. The Dolgo Crabapple is a beautiful crabapple tree that has good cold tolerance and a high level of disease resistance.  In spring, the tree is covered with white flowers and its green shiny leaves begin to form.  Due to the long bloom time of its flowers, its a good pollinator for many other types of crabapple and apple trees.  The Dolgo Crabapple produces a heavy crop of large 1 - 1.5\" olive shaped crabapples.  These crabapples are crimson in color and very flavorful.  The fruit of this tree ripens in August and September and persists well into December.
